When was shorthand developed

Medicine is another profession where shorthand lives on. The scientific names of ailments and their cures are often long due to the complexity of the profession. Human bodies are complicated, and so it is no surprise that there are a myriad of ways they can come to harm or otherwise break down. Medical shorthand is most commonly used to communicate diagnoses among caregivers and for prescribing pharmaceuticals. This saves time in a field where seconds can make the difference between life and death, though of course the stakes are not always so high.

Shorthand is a technology. While newer tools have replaced it in most fields, it appears that for the foreseeable future stenography will live on in a few professions. Whether a niche is ecological or professional, those keenly suited to certain habitats will usually thrive. Hollier, Dennis. Russon, Allien R. All rights reserved. My two passions are creative writing and helping others express themselves through the written word. Some of the best teachers I've encountered were concise prose and engaging stories.

Hopefully, what I write can fill that same role for others. View all posts by walkertwebb. Like Like. Like Liked by 2 people. Like Liked by 1 person. You are commenting using your WordPress. He became the first official court reporter in the New Jersey courts to use machine shorthand, and, possibly, he was the first official reporter in the United States to do so. Harvey Keitel, known for his roles in Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino movies, worked as a freelance court reporter in New York City for several years after he left the marines.

He found stenography came easily to him and he quickly graduated. Shorthand has long been used as a method of notation, often when time or efficiency is imperative, and as a result, it often appears in court documents and meeting minutes.

The first known shorthand system was developed by Roman Marcus Tillius Tiro c. Other systems of shorthand gained popularity starting in the eighteenth century. The system developed by Samuel Taylor utilizes characters as shortened forms of letters and words, and was applied in the recording of many records and court documents upon its development in the late eighteenth century. In Taylor Shorthand, vowels are omitted from words except when they begin or end a word, in which case they are represented by a single dot.

For example, when two consonants come together with the removal of a vowel, the symbol for that consonant is written once in a larger size. The rise of typewriters, and more recently, personal computers, has led to a significant drop in the importance of shorthand notation. In high school, female students took typing and shorthand as a matter of course. During that era, clerical positions were considered desirable ways to make money for single women.

Speed and accuracy were requirements for secretarial work, so time tests were given during employment screenings. Gregg shorthand is still being used today, even though the antiquated days of secretaries taking dictation from bosses, then typing their letters on typewriters has mostly gone by the wayside. Students are using this technique to take notes, keep up with their coursework, and businesspersons are using it to take notes in meetings. But there are more tech-savvy ways to use this technique than the old-fashioned steno pad method.

Gregg shorthand enthusiasts use this technique because it is one of the fastest ways on the planet to record conversations, thoughts, and take notes.

Once a person has mastered this abbreviated version of writing language, he or she has a powerful tool literally at his or her fingertips.
