Unlike the Patriots, both the Cowboys and Packers are based in Trump-friendly areas. Trump carried the Dallas media market by 12 percentage points; he carried the Green Bay media market by 18 points. Yet, according to our poll, the Cowboy fan base is far more Republican than the Packer fan base.
The Democratic lean of the Packer fan base may be tied to the fact that the Green Bay area has the smallest television market of any NFL franchise. This means that to become such a well-liked team, the Packers had to pick up a lot of fans outside of Green Bay only 9 percent of Packer fans are based in Wisconsin.
Arguably, though, the biggest takeaway from our poll is that every team in the NFL has both Democrats and Republicans in their fan base. And as long as Trump keeps up his fight with the NFL, all eyes will continue to be on sidelines before each game. Excluding the Alaska markets of Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau, none of which had complete search-traffic data.

Other NFL owners, including Washington's Daniel Snyder and Dallas' Jerry Jones, have opted not to make individual contributions to any federal campaigns or candidates during this election cycle — which, for those two men, represents a departure from a lengthy history of steady contributions to the GOP.
It is not unusual for team owners, many of whom also own separate businesses, to give money to politicians. But this year, the donations will likely be viewed more critically by athletes, who can weigh an owner's public gestures against his or her private spending. And their passion is not likely to fade with time. Athletes' activism has forced some owners to reconcile the disconnect between their political spending and their other actions. Take Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta.
But in the seven months since, he has made no other contributions at the federal level. And in an interview with the Houston Chronicle in June , he pledged to personally help combat racism and police brutality in America. Others have already done so. Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeffrey Vinik has a long history of financially supporting Republican politicians.
Vinik, whose team won the Stanley Cup on Monday night , was not immediately available to comment on his political giving. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, meanwhile, has intentionally not made any political donations during this election cycle. They also, by the mere act of operating during the pandemic, requiring coaches to wear masks and holding out players who tested positive for the virus, were unassumingly making political statements.
To say their donations would be looked at through a finer lens in this cycle would be putting it lightly. I would imagine that if a sitting president had criticized the developing league or its players back in the '40s, '50s, '60s or '70s, we would not see a windfall of donations headed to his cause, or to the causes of the political party he leads.
But the current ownership landscape consists of a group of wealthy businesspeople whose NFL ownership is often secondary to other interests. Indeed, we saw one team owner donate nearly a million dollars to Republican causes this cycle. Here are a few interesting tidbits off the top:.
WinRed is the Republican counter to ActBlue, which facilitates grassroots online donors. Incognito donated more money this election cycle than 17 NFL owners.
