Toddler sleep patterns and behaviours 2 to 3 years Between the ages of 2 and 3 years, toddlers often sleep 12 to 13 hours in a hour period. A number of sleep-related changes commonly occur in this age group. This includes: a decrease in daytime naps longer periods of sleep overnight often a decrease in night waking. They may still resist going to sleep at night and want to stay up with the family. Settling your toddler at 2 to 3 years By understanding and connecting with your toddler you will learn their cues and be able to support positive sleep patterns. Some strategies you can use to develop positive sleep behaviour include: Recognising and responding to tired signs Using positive and consistent bedtime routines Parental presence — using your presence as a safety signal to reduce your toddler's anxiety by sleeping in their room Bedtime fading — to try and reduce night waking in older toddlers.
It can be helpful to track your toddler's sleep for a week or so. This can give you a clear idea of what might be going on. Moving your toddler from cot to bed Once you notice your toddler is attempting to climb out of their cot, it is time to move them to a bed. A pacifier may comfort and help your baby to settle. Your baby will stir during the night. Give them a few minutes to try and settle on their own before going to them. Avoid stimulation during nighttime feedings and diaper changes.
Keep the lights dim. Infants 4 to 12 months At this age, babies sleep an average of 14 hours a day, but anything less or more can be normal for your baby.
Healthy sleep habits for your infant: Maintain a regular daytime and bedtime sleep schedule as much as possible. A consistent bedtime routine is important. This can lead to tooth decay. At around 6 months, if your baby wakes at night and cries, go check to see if there is anything wrong, such as being too cold or too warm, but try not to take them out of the crib. This helps your baby learn how to self-soothe, important steps toward falling back to sleep on their own.
Toddlers 1 to 2 years Most toddlers sleep between 11 and 14 hours in a hour period. The routine you established during the first year is even more important for your toddler.
Avoid naps that are too late in the day, because at this age, they can affect nighttime sleeping. Help your child wind down about half an hour before bedtime with stories and quiet activities. Be gentle but firm if your child protests. Keep the bedroom quiet, cozy, and good for sleeping, such as keeping the lights dim.
Soft, soothing music might be comforting. Security items such as a blanket or stuffed animal are often important at this age. Children 3 to 5 years Preschoolers typically sleep about 10 to 13 hours a day. Avoid screens before bedtime. Some children will try to delay bedtime. Set limits, such as how many books you will read together , and be sure your child knows what they are. Tuck your child into bed snugly for a feeling of security. If your child has nightmares, reassure and comfort them.
What are some common sleep problems? Separation issues : Your child may have difficulty relaxing and going to sleep if they feel upset that you are not there. You might find the first nap gets longer and later in the day as the second nap gradually stops. You can encourage your toddler to nap by having a quiet, consistent pre-nap routine.
For example, you could sing a gentle song, have a cuddle or read a story before naps. And if your toddler stops sleeping at nap time, you could try giving your toddler a rest at the same time each day.
A night terror is when your child suddenly gets very upset while sleeping deeply. Lack of sleep can cause night terrors in some children. You might need to move your child if your child has started climbing out of the cot or needs to use the potty at night. Or you might need the cot for a new baby. Many children grind their teeth at some stage.
